Militant Pacifism

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: These are the words of my old friend Benjamin Franklin: "He that would live in peace and at ease, Must not speak all he knows, nor judge all he sees."

According to Roget's New Millennium Thesaurus, the word "peace" is a synonym for "pacifism."

There are a lot of modern pacifists that do not conform to the above quotation. Many claiming to love peace judge everything and everyone they see, and are quite outspoken about it. Remember the "no blood for oil" Iraq war protestors a few years ago? How about the Bush Haters who claim to love peace and hate war, yet do not seem to apply these principles to our President?

By the way, some synonyms for the word "protestor," again according to Roget's New Millennium Thesaurus

are: beatnik, hippie, dropout and radical, to name a few. This same source states that the word can also be synonymous for "conservative" under the category of 'militant."

This is fascinating because it implies that the same word, protestor, means, in its essence, either an extreme liberal or an extreme conservative. I must protest the fact that this thesaurus equates militant behavior with conservatives, because some of the most truly militant people I have ever met were leftist liberals claiming to be peaceniks.

Remember that William Tyndale, although a peaceful and deeply religious man, was, in essence, a protestor. Click on these links to
read my "Why America is Unique" series, in which I have written about Tyndale:

Perhaps this is the kind of person that Ben had in mind.
