Donovan Sings About Soldiers

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: I recently watched "The Donovan Concert: Live in L.A." on PBS. First of all I want to make it perfectly clear that I like Donovan and I find his music to have a certain "magical" quality. I do not wish to say anything against him as a singer/songwriter or as a human being, because I think that he is probably a very liberal, yet equally inspired soul.

So you can imagine my relief when he mentioned that the song "Universal Soldier" was not written by him, but by Buffy Sainte-Marie. The words to that song are deceptively enticing, and, if one is not careful, one could find oneself easily drifting into the "spiritual" liberal ocean, wherein reside Donovan Leitch, David Lynch, and a host of others.

The song, according to Buffy St. Marie was ..."written in the basement of the Purple Onion coffee house in Toronto in the early 60's."
See
http://www.creative-native.com/lyrics/univelyr.htm for the complete lyrics to this song. The words are disturbing, and I find myself objecting to lyrics like "without him all this killing can't go on," and "He's the universal soldier and he really is to blame." The truth is that without him all this killing can go on, because tyrants and terrorists can function much better if there are no "universal soldiers."

Is the universal soldier really to blame? Did the universal soldier enter the USA and destroy buildings and lives on 9/11? No. The universal soldier volunteered  to risk his life by enlisting in the military, and continues to do so, in order to protect us. But the lyrics state that "he knows he shouldn't kill and he knows he always will, kill you for me my friend and me for you." I think that the title of this song should be changed to "Universal Terrorist"; then it might have more credibility.
