Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Barack Obama, Iowa Democratic presidential candidate, recently made a stupid and wrong decision to remove his American flag lapel pin. His plans are to never wear it again. According to MSNBC and an interview I saw with him last night on Los Angeles based KCAL 9, he believes that the best way to express his patriotism is by his "'values and ideals.'"
Obama also believes that the pin is a substitute for "'true patriotism'" since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. "'My attitude is that I’m less concerned about what you’re wearing on your lapel than what’s in your heart," he told the campaign crowd Thursday.'" "'You show your patriotism by being true to our values and ideals.'"*
My question to Mr. Obama is this: Is there some reason why you can't be a "true patriot" plus wear the pin? What values and ideals are you showing to the world by removing your pin, a symbol of America, a slight token of the gratitude and pride that Americans feel for our country? The KCAL 9 news story also mentioned that both President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney both wear their pins all the time.
Is Barack refusing to wear the pin as some kind of a protest? Is he implying that our current president and vice president are not "true patriots" since 9/11 because of the Iraq War? I have to wonder about this, since KCAL 9 also stated that Obama has been against the Iraq War since early on in his career. This seems like a strange coincidence to me.
I'm sure Barack Obama will have many liberal followers who follow suit, and not only remove their American flag lapel pins, but recycle them as well. Then they will continue to pursue their good works in performing many other patriotic acts, such as participating in "Beating Drums for Peace" rallies.
