The Day Uncle Sid Met Cy Young

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: My Uncle Sid is a huge fan of the Cleveland Indians. Some of you may remember my writing a post about my Uncle Sid on his eightieth birthday. He's a terrific person, and tells me great stories. This is one of his Cleveland Indian stories that he recently told me: It was somewhere between 1952 and 1955, when my Uncle Sid met the great pitcher, Cy Young, at a Cleveland Indians game that was being played at the Cleveland Municipal Stadium, which eventually was torn down, and no longer exists.

Uncle Sid saw some people walking over to an area where a man was sitting watching the game. The man was an elderly Cy Young, in his mid to upper eighties at that time. (Cy Young died at the age of eighty-eight, on November 4, 1955.)Uncle Sid followed the crowd, and waited his turn to get Cy Young's autograph. He signed Uncle Sid's scorecard "To Sid - Cy Young."

Uncle Sid has informed me that it is only true baseball historians that know his real name: Denton True Young. The Cy Young Award, a prestigious Major League Baseball award for pitchers, was named after him. By the way, Uncle Sid recalls that the Cleveland Indians won that game.

According to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, "One of the most consistent and durable pitchers the game has ever known, Denton True Cy Young won 511 games - almost 100 more than any other pitcher in history. He won 30 games five times and topped 20 wins an astounding 15 times."*

"Played for:  Cleveland Spiders (1890-1898), St. Louis Pefectos and Cardinals (1899-1900), Boston Americans, Somersets, Pilgrims and Red Sox (1901-1908), Cleveland Naps and Indians (1909-1911), Boston Braves (1911)"*
