Is Mitt Romney Still That MORMON Person?

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: A previous Mitt Romney evangelical supporter, Pastor Don Wilton, Pastor of First Baptist Church in Spartanburg, South Carolina, announced on October 23, according to a Baptist Press article, that he made a mistake, or "personal error," when he initially agreed to support Governor Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.

Pastor Wilton had made an official statement on Friday, October 19, stating that "'We need someone in Washington who will stand up for traditional families and Governor Romney is that person.'" It also said that while they disagreed on theology, "'his values are my values -- protecting the sanctity of human life, defending marriage and strengthening the family.'" 1

See my post, "Mitt Romney #1 Fave Of Top Evangelicals," which refers to Pastor Don Wilton's statement, and includes a list of Mitt Romney's recent top ten evangelical Christian supporters. Pastor (or Dr.) Wilton is #9 on my list.*

Pastor Wilton, the pastor of First Baptist Church in Spartanburg, and a former president of the South Carolina Baptist Convention, had previously given permission to the Romney campaign to publish his statement as a press release, but he evidently didn't realize that it would be picked up nationally. Pastor Wilton said: "'It was my personal error to agree to support Romney’s campaign. Until this incident I had never endorsed any person running for any elected office, Democrat or Republican.'" 1

According to Pastor Wilton, the Romney campaign has agreed to remove all references to his endorsement of Gov. Mitt Romney as a presidential candidate. 1

After reading this article, I had two choices:

A.
I could either remove my reference to Pastor Wilton's statement, which is #9 on my list of top ten evangelical Mitt Romney supporters.

B. I could leave his statement on that post, and write a new post explaining his new position.

Obviously, I decided on choice B, and the reason is that my blog is not the Romney campaign, and I have had no personal contact with Pastor Wilton, and no agreement with him to remove his statement from my post or my blog.

I doubt if every blogger, columnist, and journalist that picked up on the original press release, and published something about it, is going to remove anything either. So even if the Romney campaign has agreed to remove Pastor Wilton's statement, I'm sorry to tell Pastor Wilton, but his statement has already been read by countless numbers of persons, and will continue to be read by others.

I can't help but wonder why Pastor Don Wilton feels that he made a mistake, after having declared in no uncertain words that Governor Mitt Romney is definitely the person Americans need: "'We need someone in Washington who will stand up for traditional families and Governor Romney is that person.'" 1

Could the fact that Mitt Romney is a Mormon be at all even remotely related? Is Mitt Romney still that MORMON person?
