THE WAR'S Ken Burns Wants War Memoirs

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Re: Ken Burns' The War: PBS and Florentine Films formed a partnership with the Library of Congress Veterans History Project earlier this year to collect war memoirs of both veterans and civilians.

There was an official press release issued from the Library of Congress about this fact on April 17, 2007. There is a link below for both veterans and civilians that wish to participate in this joint effort project involving the collection of thousands of first-hand experiences. Here are a few excerpts from this press release:

"The Library of Congress Veterans History Project and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) today announced a joint community engagement initiative designed to gather first-hand recollections of the diverse men and women who served our nation during wartime. The public outreach campaign begins this spring and will continue beyond the broadcast of Ken Burns’ new film, 'The War,' which is scheduled to air on PBS beginning on September 23, 2007."

"PBS is proud to partner with the Library of Congress on this extraordinary effort to involve the entire country in a national discussion about World War II and the contributions of this generation. ‘The War’ is a magnificent piece of filmmaking that looks at the Second World War in the most intimate of ways, allowing a handful of individuals to tell their stories. We hope that the film will build interest in the broader, important work of the Veterans History Project and encourage thousands of people from coast to coast to share their stories with friends, loved ones and, ultimately, the country through the collection at the Library of Congress," said Paula Kerger, president and chief executive officer of PBS."

"If you want to participate in this effort and need more information on VHP and how to submit a collection to us, please
link to our "how to participate" page. Throughout 2007, PBS stations all over the country will be initiating outreach programs designed to raise awareness of World War II and the need for its veterans and civilian workers to tell their stories for the record. VHP will participate in many public programs to encourage citizen participation in these efforts. As these events are scheduled, we will carry news of them."

I am aware that some of you are having problems with this series for various reasons, based on some feedback I have received. Perhaps the main reason is due to a preconceived prejudice against PBS due to its liberal reputation. If the Library of Congress and the Veterans History Project both approve of this film, and don't think that it is dishonest or slanted, then why should you?
