Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Today, the sixth anniversary of 9/11, is an unofficial National Day of Mourning for America. I am already seeing blog posts being published on the internet, and articles starting to crop up everywhere. I want to tell our soldiers that they have not been fighting in vain. Many say their heroism is villainous, that they have no real reason or purpose in being involved in the Iraq War. I hope they don't listen to these angry voices trying to convince them that their efforts don't have any real meaning, because those who say this are wrong.
On that fatal day, September 11, 2001, Americans woke up to hear their favorite news announcers' voices shaking, to see some of them crying, trying to maintain their composure when telling us what had just occurred. We woke up early that morning, turned on our televisions, and saw the World Trade Center burst into flames. We heard the moans and cries of people inside the buildings, the agony in their voices, because they knew there was no way out, and that they were soon going to die. We watched in horror as some of them jumped out of windows, leaping to their sudden and unexpected deaths.
They were just like you and me. They woke up to their alarm clocks that fatal morning, drank their coffee, maybe ate breakfast, put on their office attire, or uniforms, then drove, or took the subway, to their jobs. They were following their daily routine, not expecting anything unusual to happen that morning. It would have been better if all of them had taken that day off, had not followed their schedules.
How could anyone know what was about to happen? Even the psychics had nothing to say; I heard no dire predictions ahead of time. There are those who insist that President Bush had advanced knowledge about this, and that he is an evil man, who had evil intent. They ignore the facts and theorize that the facts were fiction, that the media lied, that the news footage we saw wasn't even real. They willingly defy all rational thought in order to embrace an irrational answer as to why these events happened.
There is no desire to see or know the truth, because they can't believe there are people who are filled with this much hatred and evilness; to them, evilness doesn't exist. But evil is real, it exists; its potential is in the heart of every person. The majority of people do not pay heed to its voice, but those who listen, and worship its sound, wreak havoc upon mankind.
It isn't our soldiers who harm others. They protect and defend us. They suffer, bleed, and die for us. They are the true martyrs, not the Muslim fanatics who piloted the planes on 9/11. The soldiers who died for humanity are the ones who are in Heaven now, not the Muslim fanatics who imagined that a special, Divine world would be waiting for them when they died.
I'm sorry, but that world they hoped to enter is imaginary. There is no Divine place waiting for pilots who fly hijacked planes into American buildings, with the sole intent to kill. Is there a special home in some other world waiting for them? If there is, it won't be pleasant, but, then again, they might really enjoy having Hitler, Stalin, and Saddam Hussein as their neighbors.
