Why America Is Unique - Part 2
Can Governor Mitt Romney become President? Will Conservatives, especially Evangelical Christians, vote for a Mormon? In the 16th century, William Tyndale was burned at the stake for believing that people had the right to interpret and read the Bible in their own language (in this case, English).
This was not the practice at that time. Everyone was simply supposed to go along with whatever the Church taught, and not allowed to make their own decisions about theology or challenge official Church Doctrines. This was forbidden. There was no freedom of thought in this regard. Make no mistake about it. Many were killed for the cause of religious freedom.
Therefore, it would dishonor the memory of William Tyndale, and all of the other Christian martyrs that were killed because of their so-called dissenting viewpoints, if Christians today were to "cast away" Mitt Romney just because he is a Mormon. I, for one, do not want to think that Tyndale and all of the other Protestant martyrs that died for the cause of the Reformation simply died in vain. I want to honor them, and the noble causes for which they died, and I can do this by reading the Bible in my own language and in my own home, and by not dismissing Governor Mitt Romney's chances to become President of the United States just because of his religious beliefs.
I have not decided that Governor Mitt Romney is my favorite choice as of yet. I still need to study what he and other Republican candidates stand for, but I certainly will not wave a magic wand and say "Hocus Pocus" to make him disappear. Governor Romney seems as though he might be an excellent person, with high moral and ethical values, (like our current President George W. Bush), and I want to see someone like that in the White House.
