Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Have you ever seen pacifists out there protesting President Bush and Iraq with their large signs? Why do some pacifistic protestors have such violent tempers? Did you ever see their "No Blood for Oil" signs? Did you ever venture to walk up to them and try to have a conversation with some of them?
I was brave a few years ago, and decided to walk right into their picketing area. I can tell you that it was not fun, and it was even almost scary to talk to a young woman, (possibly a college student) for example, who told me that she was Jewish, and yet fully supported the Palestinians. She really was in favor of all Middle Eastern inhabitants, with the sole exception of her own people, the Jewish people. I asked her if she thought that Saddam Hussein was evil, and she said "no." I asked her if he wasn't like another Hitler, and she replied "no" once more.
I felt sorry for her, because I somehow sensed that she might have had a few remote thoughts way in the back of her mind that maybe she was making a mistake, but she was so identified with this particular group of protestors, and their false ideals, that she could not escape, at least not at that time. I hope that she has now become a wiser person.
Then there was the guy who might have been their leader, because he screamed at me with the loudest voice, who kept arguing with every conservative point that I was logically making, and absolutely refused to see truth in anything that I was saying. That would have been all right, except that he was incapable of debating in a calm manner. I finally left because I felt so uncomfortable around these people who claimed to love peace and hate war.
The truth is that pacifists do not always demonstrate, in the real world, the wonderful and beautiful ideals that are in their minds. I know there are, and always have been, some true pacifists that would never scream and never do any violent acts. But I can't help but wonder if the percentage of this group is extremely low compared to the pacifists that I have described.
