Burns' PBS War Film Is New Ward Victory

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: I hope you have been watching Ken Burns' film called The War, a new PBS documentary about World War II, written by Geoffrey C. Ward. I have already written a post about the seven-part series (see my link below), but I also wanted to write something about Geoffrey C. Ward. He is a brilliant and prolific journalist, author, and historian. You are familiar with his work if you have ever watched any of the previous documentaries produced by Ken Burns as PBS specials, such as The Civil War, Baseball, and Jazz.

Ward's collaboration with Burns since 1984 is only one portion of his immense career. He has been awarded five Emmys and five Christopher Awards for his documentaries. He has also written several books. I have heard people say that there are no longer any true geniuses today. Nothing could be further from the truth. It takes a genius to write the kind of long, involved documentaries of epic proportions that Geoffrey C. Ward consistently writes.

There are those who might interpret The War as having a liberal slant. I do not belong to this group. It isn't liberal to tell the truth, even if that truth is painful to watch, or examined for a longer time period than some might be comfortable viewing. A writer's responsibility is to emphasize what he or she deems to be most important. Backed up by factual film clips, and eye witnesses, The War reveals a true and valid historical account of World War II, and is an amazing documentary.

Episodes will be rebroadcast on KCET in Los Angeles, California all day this Sunday, September 30, beginning at 10:00 AM.
