Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Are you suffering from Conservative Phobia Syndrome? Do you often have the liberal blues? Do you feel sad because you are a liberal? Are your agnostic or atheistic thoughts harassing you?
You know that deep down inside you really admire conservatives, and wish that you could cross over, but you don't dare. What would all of your friends and relatives think? You worry that they might look at you as having suddenly lost your mind completely. Would that really be the case? You know it would not. Somewhere in your mind is a conservative thought just waiting to escape into your mouth and speak the words.
If you would simply try to vocalize this idea one time, it will be easier the next time. Pretty soon, you will notice that you're not as sad. You will no longer be writing and singing sorrowful folk songs about the dangers of popcorn, French fries, light bulbs, candles, and global warming. These have now become remnants of your past, memories no longer cherished, trivial and boring to the core.
Suddenly you find yourself believing in a Supreme Being. Dare you give this Supreme Being a name--perhaps God? Maybe you no longer see the Bible as a book of unrelated and contradictory texts that contradict each other.
You know now that your life has meaning, and are deeply sorry that you have wasted too much time dwelling on meaningless ideas that you once thought were the answer to the world's problems. You no longer have Conservative Phobia Syndrome, because you have become a conservative.
Once you reach this point, there is no turning back. You will recognize the liberal persuasions when you hear them, and know they are not true. You now have something you seldom had before, which is the gift of discrimination.
You also now realize that the world doesn't revolve around you, and that your former liberal ideas were not, as previously thought, more valid than your current conservative thoughts. Your liberal past has now become your conservative future.
