Thomas Jefferson's Interview With God

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: I recently wrote another one of my popular Mitt Romney posts called "Shall Romney and Jefferson Meet In Hell?".* The last sentence in my post was this question: "Is Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers of the American Republic, in Hell?" A posted comment by a commentator states that Thomas Jefferson is in Hell. In light of this statement, I now wish to present to you a short play that I wrote.

Thomas Jefferson's Interview With God

God: Thomas, my son, you have received criticism from one of the Conservative Wordsmith's commentators.

Jefferson: Oh? What, pray Thee, was the nature of this remark?

God: The gentleman feels that you did not worship my son, Jesus, as equally, or perfectly, as do the evangelical Christians.

Jefferson: Yes, I understand completely. Although I was a Deist, and did not accept Jesus in the same orthodox manner, nevertheless, I did highly esteem Him, and tried to emulate his moral teachings to the best of my ability, although I must admit that my best was flawed.

God: Do you think you should have gone to Hell, or are you satisfied that Heaven is your rightful eternal inheritance? I only ask you this question because you are one of the most admired men who ever lived in America, a country I love deeply, and one of her Founding Fathers.

Jefferson: Lord, if I may be so bold, it behooves me to assert the truth that I do deserve to be in Heaven. My differences with evangelical Christians should definitely not relegate me to the darkness of eternal Hell.

God: I agree with you, my son. There are many different kinds of Christians, including Mormons (Latter-Day Saints), Catholics, and a multitude of others. There are as many Christian denominations as are necessary for the various interpretations of mortals' minds.

Jefferson: Ah, yes! There is also, I daresay, even room for frippery in the minds of some men. Frippery of wit does not belong to the proper interpretation of scripture.

God: You are right, Thomas, and the words you have spoken are good and true. Christians dare not be associated with frippery of thought, less such thoughts be unworthy of my due respect and adoration.

Jefferson: Thank you, Lord, for your interest in my thoughts, which, I pray, were adequate in expressing my views.

God: Thank you, Thomas Jefferson, for this interview, which I thoroughly enjoyed. You are one of my best creations, and at least you could never be accused of having frippery of wit.
