Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Mitt Romney delivered a powerful speech at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum on Thursday, December 6, 2007. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney certainly looked like a U.S. President, and spoke eloquent words that he wrote himself, with a voice that sounded very presidential.
I can't think of any other Republican or Democratic presidential candidate that looks and sounds this positive and authoritative. Will Governor Mitt Romney follow in President John F. Kennedy’s footsteps? Their speeches both emphasized the importance of the "No Religious Test" clause in Article 6 of the U. S. Constitution, and the need for religious tolerance; a topic, by the way, that has been consistently explored by The Conservative Wordsmith Weblog. President John F. Kennedy was America's first Roman Catholic president. Will Governor Mitt Romney be America's first Mormon president?
"'There is one fundamental question about which I often am asked. What do I believe about Jesus Christ? I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of mankind. My church's beliefs about Christ may not all be the same as those of other faiths. Each religion has its own unique doctrines and history. These are not bases for criticism but rather a test of our tolerance. Religious tolerance would be a shallow principle indeed if it were reserved only for faiths with which we agree.'" - Governor Mitt Romney 1
"'Finally, I believe in an America where religious intolerance will someday end--where all men and all churches are treated as equal--where every man has the same right to attend or not attend the church of his choice--where there is no Catholic vote, no anti-Catholic vote, no bloc voting of any kind--and where Catholics, Protestants and Jews, at both the lay and pastoral level, will refrain from those attitudes of disdain and division which have so often marred their works in the past, and promote instead the American ideal of brotherhood.'" - Senator John F. Kennedy 2
