Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Mitt Romney, a Mormon, is a man of values, and there are several mainstream evangelical Christian leaders that see Mitt Romney as the Republican nominee. Why would these evangelical leaders pick a Mormon? This is perplexing to many evangelical Christians that are only interested in evangelical Christian candidates.
According to Dr. Wayne Grudem, an evangelical research professor of Bible and theology at the Phoenix Seminary in Phoenix, Arizona; also a Townhall columnist: "'Here in the United States, God used not only Founding Fathers who were strong Christians, but also Deists such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, to build the foundation of our nation. Jefferson even became our third President in 1801, a demonstration of the wisdom of Article 6 of the Constitution, which says, 'no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.'"* 1
The "no religious test" clause in the Constitution applies to those of all religions or religious denominations, and this, of course, includes Mormons. If you know in your heart that Mitt Romney is the right choice, but are still having doubts because he is not a "traditional" Christian, perhaps Article 6 of the Constitution will have the power to convince you that you are wrong. If you think that only an evangelical Christian should be the U.S. President, then you are not following the American Constitution.
