Mitt Romney, Mormons, Jesus, and Christmas

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Does Mitt Romney, as a Mormon, believe in the Divine Birth of Jesus Christ? Do Mormons even believe in the celebration of Christmas? The answer is an unequivocal yes.

"christmas treeChristmas is the holiday when Latter-day Saints and other Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. This epochal event, seen in vision by ancient prophets, heralded the entry into mortality of the Son of God, the Jehovah of the Old Testament, and the promised Messiah. Even though Latter-day Saints believe that the birth of Jesus actually occurred in the spring of the year (D&C 20:1; see April 6), they observe the December celebration when, more than at any other time of year, the Christian world unites in remembering Christ's birth and practicing his teachings of love, charity, self-sacrifice, and tolerance."

"Latter-day Saints are cautioned that holiday shopping, decorating, and festivities should not obscure the remembrance of Christ nor hinder the quest for peace on earth."

The Conservative Wordsmith can't help but notice that the above article refers to Jesus as the Son of God, and also as the promised Messiah, which is contrary to what some of my commentators have been posting. I was pleased to read that Mormons believe that Jesus taught tolerance. I support this particular belief 100%. Please click on the tolerance link above to read George Romney’s interesting article entitled "Religious Tolerance." *Also, see my related posts about religious tolerance.

Please note that Mormons seem to have a similarity to evangelical Christians in their warning to not let the commercialism of the Christmas "obscure the remembrance of Christ nor hinder the quest for peace on earth." (I refer to the phrase commonly used by evangelicals: "Jesus is the Reason for the Season.")

Perhaps during this special Christmas season there might be a glimmer of hope that true tolerance could be appreciated by more evangelical Christians. Then perhaps Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney could actually become the first Mormon U.S. President, triumphantly overcoming the obstacles of intolerance. The bigotry against Roman Catholics did not prevail when Senator John F. Kennedy became the first Catholic U.S. President, and it is my hope that the inherent evilness of religious intolerance will not prevail against Governor Mitt Romney.

Shall Romney and Jefferson Meet In Hell?

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Mitt Romney has recently been praised by several evangelical leaders, yet I still keep receiving negative comments to the effect that Mitt Romney, as a Mormon, is a member of a weird cult and is going to Hell one day. This is the reason given as to why these commentators will not support his Republican presidential candidacy.

These evangelical Christians, opposing the views of the above-mentioned evangelical leaders, seem to think that profession of evangelical Christian faith is a necessary requirement for a presidential candidate, and they justify the rejection of Mitt Romney as a viable candidate because he is a Mormon.

According to  Dr. Wayne Grudem, an evangelical research professor of Bible and theology at the Phoenix Seminary in Phoenix, Arizona; also a Townhall columnist: "'Here in the United States, God used not only Founding Fathers who were strong Christians, but also Deists such as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, to build the foundation of our nation. Jefferson even became our third President in 1801, a demonstration of the wisdom of Article 6 of the Constitution, which says, 'no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.'"* 1

According to a Library of Congress Exhibition called Religion and the Founding of the American Republic,
II. Religion in Eighteenth-Century America: "Another religious movement that was the antithesis of evangelicalism made its appearance in the eighteenth century. Deism, which emphasized morality and rejected the orthodox Christian view of the divinity of Christ, found advocates among upper-class Americans. Conspicuous among them were Thomas Jefferson and John Adams. Deists, never more than'a minority within a minority,' were submerged by evangelicalism in the nineteenth century." 2

Notice that the explanation above states that Deism was the opposite of evangelicalism, and that Deists rejected the divinity of Christ.

The Exhibition continues, on
DEISM: "Deism stressed morality and rejected the orthodox Christian view of the divinity of Christ, often viewing him as nothing more than a 'sublime' teacher of morality. Thomas Jefferson and John Adams are usually considered the leading American deists. There is no doubt that they subscribed to the deist credo that all religious claims were to be subjected to the scrutiny of reason. 'Call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion,' Jefferson advised." 2

Regarding Mitt Romney, if Thomas Jefferson were alive today, would Jefferson’s qualifications as the next U.S. President look equally as grim to some evangelical Christians? Since Deists rejected the divinity of Christ, Jefferson would be an equal target of Christian intolerance and hostility.

What kind of country would America be today if Thomas Jefferson had never held any public office, due to the fact that his Deist beliefs outweighed his Christian faith? Based on these facts, I must now ask you this question: Is Thomas Jefferson, one of the Founding Fathers of the American Republic, in Hell?

Mormon Inventions For Everyman

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Did you know that Mormons invented many of the well-known items and devices we all use daily? You can thank Philo Farnsworth, a Mormon, for inventing your television. If you have trouble hearing, you can thank another Mormon inventor, Harvey Fletcher, for inventing your hearing aid. The visual and musical entertainment we all enjoy in our homes on a daily basis, and which most of us take for granted, are largely due to Mormon creativity.

Here is a partial list of Mormon inventions:

television -
Philo Farnsworth
headphones - Nathaniel Baldwin*
CD/DVD technology -
Robert B. Ingebretsen (plus other physicists, engineers and computer scientists at Brigham Young University and the University of Utah)
stereo sound - Harvey Fletcher
transistor radio - Marvin Harris
electric guitar - Alvino Rey
hearing aid - Harvey Fletcher
artificial heart - Robert K. Jarvik (inventor/doctor) & Barney Clark (first recipient)
heart bypass machine used in open heart surgery - Homer R. Warner

Seeing Christmas Rightly With One's Heart

*Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin's Christmas Message To My Readers:
I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas, and to remind you that the Star of Bethlehem can still be a sign of Hope for all of us today, just as it was long ago for the Three Wise Men, or Magi. They looked up at the sky, and saw this special Star, a sign to them in the sky that the Savior of the World had been born. They traveled many miles to see the little baby Jesus in a manger, bringing him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They worshipped the baby, recognizing him as the King of Kings, the Messiah, worthy to be reverenced and adored.

I know it is difficult for some, maybe many, to find any sense of real joy at Christmas. Sometimes one needs to let go of one's own worries and concerns, and allow the Lord to wipe away your your outer and inner tears. Remember that Jesus also suffered greatly, and understands your sorrows and needs. I understand that it is not easy to do this, but it is necessary, for every person must have hopes and dreams, and these hopes and dreams will be more likely to die if Jesus the Savior is not in the picture.

Jesus Christ the Lord gave us His Holy Spirit, also called the Holy Ghost, or the Paraclete, which means Comforter, for that very reason--so that we would know where to go in order to receive the ultimate comfort.
You may think that a mug of beer or a shot of whiskey will rescue you from your woes. It might give temporary relief, but it will never cure you of your sorrows.

Turn to Jesus, the Man of Sorrows, in your time of need
. Do not despair. You may not be able to see Him with your physical eyes, but you can choose to recognize Him with your heart. Sometimes the heart sees more clearly than the eyes. The author of the famous book The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupery, beautifully wrote "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."

"Goodbye," said the fox. "And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."

"What is essential is invisible to the eye," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important."

"It is the time I have wasted for my rose--" said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember.

"Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox. "But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose . . ."

"I am responsible for my rose," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember." -

A Prayer For Those Who Seek God's Face

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: I wrote this prayer for you, my readers. I ask God to bless all of you, especially those who seek God's face.

If you have been the target of physical, intellectual, or emotional intolerance, then this prayer is for you.

King James Bible
Psalm 24:6: "This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah." 1

King James Bible

Psalm 27:8: "When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek." 2

A Prayer For Those Who Seek God's Face

May you always be blessed by the one, true God.

May He always lift you up out of depression and hopelessness.

May you always be directed and guided by Him whenever you need to make decisions about anything important in your life.

May you recognize that there are those who belong to other Christian denominations (such as Mormons), and even other religions, who are living holy lives, and are, in fact, actually following God, regardless of your preconceived notions.

May you learn to be tolerant toward those that believe differently than you do.

May you learn to be tolerant toward those of other ethnic and religious backgrounds.

May you understand that the Lord's tolerance far surpasses your imperfect interpretation.

May you come to an understanding that even those who vehemently protest belief in God may, in fact, be closer to Him than you realize. Sometimes protest is an outward form of an inner spiritual struggle.

May you continue to walk on a good and righteous path, and may no harm or evil ever befall you.

May you never allow fear the power to destroy your dreams.

Amen.

Play Fun Charles Dickens Survival Game!

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Do you think you could have survived in Charles Dickens' 19th century London, England? Use your conservative or liberal ethics and skills to find out. The United Kingdom's BBC has an educational, fun, and eye-opening game. Dare to click the link below to enter the extremely dangerous, unhealthy, unsanitary, and impoverished Victorian London. This game was based on the BBC's Masterpiece Theater serial adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel, Bleak House. I have played it more than once, and thought I would share it with you.

After you play the game, ask yourself these questions: Is America basically a good country or an evil country? Is the American economy good or bad? If there really was a time machine, and you were given a choice of either living in America as it is today or going back in time to live in Dickensian London, which would you choose? (Remember, the choice would be to live there permanently, and you would not be able to return to America, in the present time period, ever again.)

This game, which is also accompanied by rather intriguing music, takes more than a few minutes to play, so please allow ample time to fully explore the world of Charles Dickens. Warning! It can be addicting! I have also provided extra links below, including an artistic and humorous life of Charles Dickens animation, created by Rufflebrothers, for your enjoyment.

Bill Calls St. Hillary A 'World-Class Genius'

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: According to former President Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton is a "world-class genius" in helping others improve their lives.

"'The reason she ought to be president, over and above her vision and her plans is that she has proven in every position she has ever had in life, whether it was in elected office or not, that she is a world-class genius in making positive changes in other people's lives,' he said."

"Clinton lauded his wife for her early work for the Children's Defense Fund, her efforts to improve education in Arkansas when he was the state's governor and her work in the U.S. Senate, repeatedly and forcefully calling her 'an agent of change.'"
1

"'She's got the right vision, big plans and a proven ability to change lives for the better. Experience and change are only opposed in values if you're so experienced you don't have any energy left and you can't cut it, or if your experience is in fighting change,' he said." "'But if you know how to do things, and you prove it over a long time that you can make change in other people's lives, I think that is a pretty strong recommendation.'"
1

Thank you, former President Bill Clinton for telling the world why you think your wife Hillary Clinton should be the next U.S. President. I'm glad you pointed out the reason to us, because maybe some people will be stirred into political reality by this statement, realizing that the reason you cited is not an extremely impressive one.

I am not a child, nor do I reside in Arkansas. I can't seem to find any words that would describe Hillary Clinton’s work in the U.S. Senate as an indication that she is a "world-class genius." I really can't relate to Hillary as "an agent of change," because none of her deeds have affected my life one iota.

Besides that fact, the examples that Bill Clinton mentioned are not, at least to me, anything that evokes feelings of tremendous awe or admiration. If he had said that she spent years working with lepers in India, I might have been able to muster up a tiny bit of respect for her so-called "world-class genius." (I emphasize the word "might.")

The fact is, though, that Hillary Rodham Clinton is not another Mother Teresa of Calcutta, India. Does Hillary even remotely resemble the famous Roman Catholic nun that spent years of her life ministering to lepers, whom she called "the poorest of the poor?"

So, please, Mr. former President Bill Clinton, do not expect me to believe your exaggerated statement.  Actually, I think that you could be called a world-class genius in stretching the truth. While there may be others who worship the very ground you and your wife Hillary walk on, I, for one, am not one of them.

It's a good thing that Bill Clinton did not actually say that his wife Hillary is a genius in the commonly understood interpretation of that word, because that would be going a bit too far. Hillary has made some of the most nonsensical comments ever made by a politician. If you are familiar with some of her comments, you will immediately understand what I am saying. *If you are not, please see my related post below.

St. Francis of Assisi's Canticle of Praises

* Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Read St. Francis of Assisi's Praises of the Creatures, or The Canticle of the Sun, popularly known as Canticle of Brother Sun and Sister Moon. Holiness is something few of us attain, and St. Francis of Assisi was indeed a holy man, a true Christian Saint in every possible meaning of the word. I hope you enjoy this offering as a refreshing start to your busy day.

The Writings of St. Francis of Assisi, tr. by Paschal Robinson, [1905],    at sacred-texts.com

p. 150

V.

THE CANTICLE OF THE SUN.

HERE BEGIN THE PRAISES OF THE CREATURES WHICH THE BLESSED FRANCIS MADE TO THE PRAISE AND HONOR OF GOD WHILE HE WAS ILL AT ST. DAMIAN'S:

Most high, omnipotent, good Lord,
Praise, glory and honor and benediction all, are Thine.
To Thee alone do they belong, most High,
And there is no man fit to mention Thee.

Praise be to Thee, my Lord, with all Thy creatures,
Especially to my worshipful brother sun,
The which lights up the day, and through him dost Thou brightness give;
And beautiful is he and radiant with splendor great;
Of Thee, most High, signification gives.

Praised be my Lord, for sister moon and for the stars,
In heaven Thou hast formed them clear and precious and fair.
p. 153

Praised be my Lord for brother wind
And for the air and clouds and fair and every kind of weather,
By the which Thou givest to Thy creatures nourishment.
Praised be my Lord for sister water,
The which is greatly helpful and humble and precious and pure.

Praised be my Lord for brother fire,
By the which Thou lightest up the dark.
And fair is he and gay and mighty and strong.

Praised be my Lord for our sister, mother earth,
The which sustains and keeps us
And brings forth diverse fruits with grass and flowers bright.

Praised be my Lord for those who for Thy love forgive
And weakness bear and tribulation.
Blessed those who shall in peace endure,
For by Thee, most High, shall they be crowned.
Praised be my Lord for our sister, the bodily death,
From the which no living man can flee.
Woe to them who die in mortal sin;
Blessed those who shall find themselves in Thy most holy will,
For the second death shall do them no ill.

Praise ye and bless ye my Lord, and give Him thanks,
And be subject unto Him with great humility. 1

Tancredo Quits '08 Race, Endorses Romney

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Republican Tom Tancredo, a five-term Colorado congressman, quit the 2008 presidential race on Thursday, December 20, 2007, and endorsed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney as "the best hope for our cause".

"He said he decided to drop out in part because of concern that staying in could split the vote for other candidates who have taken a hard line on immigration, helping those who would take a less restrictive approach."

"'I fear remaining in this race, one which I cannot win, would contribute to the nomination of one of these candidates,' he said."

"Tancredo identified former Arkansas Gov.
Mike Huckabee and Arizona Sen. John McCain as two Republican candidates whose records indicate they wouldn't be tough enough on immigration."

"He said Romney has a proven record of opposing illegal immigration while governor of Massachusetts, ending driver's licenses and in-state tuition for illegal immigrants."

"He also said Huckabee's recent rise in the polls was a factor in his decision to drop out of the race."

"Tancredo said he and Romney met Thursday for more than an hour and he left the meeting convinced that the former Massachusetts governor would do what's necessary to fight illegal immigration."

"'He is the best hope for our cause,' Tancredo said."

"None of the other candidates, including Romney, has hit the issue as hard as Tancredo. One of his campaign ads showed a man in a hooded sweat shirt with a backpack in a crowded mall. The screen went dark at the sound of an explosion, then showed clips of the aftermath of terrorist acts in Europe."

I wonder if Kevin McCullough would mind if were to add The Conservative Wordsmith to his list of Mitt's cabinet members. This could be a brand new position called Blogger of Defense for the Department of Religious Tolerance.

Seriously, though, I have been writing about Mitt Romney, Mormons (Latter-day Saints), and religious tolerance for months now.
I made my official endorsement of Mitt and Ann Romney public on Monday, October 1, 2007.*
I fully agree with Tom Tancredo when he said, referring to Mitt Romney, that "he is the best hope for our cause." Mitt is a person who could truly bring new energy, vitality, and hope to the American public and to the world at large.

Mitt Romney, as the first Mormon U.S. President, could also inspire many more Americans to embrace the concept of religious tolerance, and apply it in their everyday lives, which would mean even more religious liberty in this great country called America.**

Romney, Clinton Full Speed Ahead In NH

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton are both leading in New Hampshire, according to a Miami Herald article posted on Wednesday, December 19, 2007. "The telephone poll for CNN and Manchester, N.H., television station WMUR reached 411 likely Republican voters and 469 likely Democratic voters Dec. 13-17. In both surveys, the margin of sampling error was plus or minus 5 percentage points." 1

"THE NUMBERS - DEMOCRATS

Hillary Rodham Clinton, 38 percent

Barack Obama, 26 percent

John Edwards, 14 percent

Bill Richardson, 8 percent

---

THE NUMBERS - REPUBLICANS

Mitt Romney, 34 percent

John McCain, 22 percent

Rudy Giuliani, 16 percent

Mike Huckabee, 10 percent" 1

Governor Mitt Romney, a Mormon (Latter-day Saint), continues to be the most popular candidate in New Hampshire, and Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister and evangelical Christian, is apparently the least popular Republican presidential candidate.

People in New Hampshire are not so easily fooled by self-righteous proclamations of religious belief, and yes, I do refer to Mike Huckabee when I say this in all sincerity. Unlike Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney has never, to the best of my knowledge, taken a swipe at anyone else's religion. Mike Huckabee made a big mistake when he recently asked a question about whether Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers. *(See my related post.)

Mike Huckabee demonstrated to his potential voters that his brand of Christianity might include more than a touch of Christian intolerance. The Conservative Wordsmith votes "No" for Mike Huckabee, an evangelical Christian, and "Yes" for Mitt Romney, a Mormon Christian. Furthermore, The Conservative Wordsmith is not at all disturbed about the likely possibility that a Mormon, Governor Mitt Romney, may well be the next President of the United States of America.

Mitt Romney Endorsed By Judge Robert Bork

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was endorsed by Judge Robert Bork on Saturday, December 15.

Judge Bork said this about Mitt Romney: "'No other candidate will do more to advance the conservative judicial movement than Governor Mitt Romney. He knows firsthand how the judicial branch can profoundly affect the future course of a state and a nation. I greatly admired his leadership in Massachusetts in the way that he responded to the activist court's ruling legalizing same-sex 'marriage.' His leadership on the issue has served as a model to the nation on how to respect all of our citizens while respecting the rule of law at the same time.'"

"Judge Bork continued, 'Our next President may be called upon to make more than one Supreme Court nomination, and Governor Romney is committed to nominating judges who take their oath of office seriously and respect the rule of law in our nation. I also support Governor Romney because of his character, his integrity and his stands on the major issues facing the United States.'" 1 *

According to Hugh Hewitt, "'Nothing is certain in politics, but Romney is holding the strongest hand by far as the Christmas season largely pushes politics from voter's attention until January 3.'"

"'Looking back at 2007, Romney played the long campaign best of all of the candidates.'" 2

Governor Mitt Romney’s character and integrity are exceptional, and Mitt’s leadership skills, political experience, and strength throughout his campaign are beyond question. Don't just take the Conservative Wordsmith's word - Look to Judge Robert Bork and Hugh Hewitt also.

Do you still question Mitt Romney’s intentions or his honesty? If you do, you may soon discover that your opinion is not in the majority any longer. In fact, you may end up being one of the few remaining persons in the world still clinging to outdated anti-Mormon sentiments.

Romney 33%, Huckabee 11%, In NH Fox News Poll

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is leading in New Hampshire by 33%, according to the latest Fox News poll. "Romney holds the allegiance of a full one-third of likely Republican primary voters (33 percent) — up from 29 percent in the FOX News poll conducted at the end of November." This is significant, as New Hampshire's primary, which is the first one in the United States, will take place in approximately three weeks.

"McCain draws one in five voters (20 percent), close to the 21 percent he claimed in the previous poll. Giuliani garners 16 percent — down 3 points from the 19 percent he held at the end of last month. Much of the movement in the race may be due to the drop in undecided sentiment, which went from 14 percent in November to 8 percent in this new poll."

"A second tier of candidates was comprised of Mike Huckabee (11 percent) and Ron Paul (8 percent), with Fred Thompson, Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter trailing far behind in the low single digits or less."

"Moreover, Romney voters are more likely to think their candidate can win the November 2008 general election (63 percent) than are Giuliani supporters (60 percent) or McCain supporters (53 percent). This last result represents a shift in sentiment from the November poll, when Giuliani voters clearly were more confident than others on this score."

"Among the top three contenders, Romney voters also are the most enthusiastic about their choice (84 percent), followed by Giuliani voters (81 percent) and McCain voters (75 percent)."

"The share of likely Republican primary voters who would be very satisfied with a Romney nomination stands at 40 percent, while 30 percent would feel the same way about McCain being the GOP standard-bearer and 27 percent would be very satisfied with Giuliani at the top of the ticket. Just under one in five (19 percent) would be very satisfied with a Huckabee nomination."

"Nearly half of all likely Republican primary voters say they are pro-life (49 percent), with just under four in 10 saying they are pro-choice (38 percent). "Pro-life" voters give Romney a commanding 23-point lead over McCain (39 percent to 16 percent), with Huckabee claiming 14 percent of these and Giuliani getting 11 percent."

It's interesting that Mitt Romney, member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (or Mormons), has such a "commanding 23-point lead" on the Pro-life issue over Mike Huckabee's lagging 14%. This is significant because Mike Huckabee is an ordained Southern Baptist minister. According to the Fox News poll, Mitt's supporters also have the most confidence in their candidate.

New Hampshire is a beautiful state. The motto on New Hampshire license plates is "Live Free or Die." America was founded on the principle of religious freedom, and, evidently, a good percentage of voters in New Hampshire understand this principle, and aim to put it into practice.

Romney: Religious Attacks Are Not American

Conservative Wordsmith Susan Baldwin writes: Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney responded to what I consider to be an intolerant religious question asked by Republican candidate Mike Huckabee: "'In an article to be published Sunday in The New York Times,* Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?'"

"Romney, vying to become the first Mormon elected president, declined to answer that question during an interview Wednesday, saying church leaders in Salt Lake City had already addressed the topic."

"'But I think attacking someone's religion is really going too far. It's just not the American way, and I think people will reject that,' Romney told NBC's 'Today' show."

"Asked if he believed Huckabee was speaking in a coded language to evangelicals, Romney praised his rival as a 'good man trying to do the best he can,' but he added, "'I don't believe that the people of this country are going to choose a person based on their faith and what church they go to.'"

"But Huckabee's campaign did not provide more information about the exchange, which the magazine reported this way in the article by Zev Chafets:* "'I asked Huckabee, who describes himself as the only Republican candidate with a degree in theology, if he considered Mormonism a cult or a religion. 'I think it's a religion,' he said. 'I really don't know much about it.'"

"'I was about to jot down this piece of boilerplate when Huckabee surprised me with a question of his own: 'Don't Mormons,' he asked in an innocent voice, 'believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?'"

"Huckabee has been surging in recent opinion polls, taking the GOP lead in Iowa and pressing closer to Rudy Giuliani in polling."

"The former Massachusetts governor also was asked why he used the term 'Mormon' only once last week in a highly publicized speech about religion in which he said he was proud of his faith."

"'Actually, we prefer the name 'The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,'" he said. '"'Mormon' used to be a nickname and I don't use it a lot, but now and then I do because people know what faith I'm referring to, and I talked about 'my faith' a number of times, and I don't imagine anybody is confused about what faith I have.''"

"The authoritative Encyclopedia of Mormonism, published in 1992, does not refer to Jesus and Satan as brothers. It speaks of Jesus as the son of God and of Satan as a fallen angel, which is a Biblical account."

"A spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Huckabee's question is usually raised by those who wish to smear the Mormon faith rather than clarify doctrine."

"'We believe, as other Christians believe and as Paul wrote, that God is the father of all,'" said the spokeswoman, Kim Farah. "'That means that all beings were created by God and are his spirit children. Christ, on the other hand, was the only begotten in the flesh and we worship him as the son of God and the savior of mankind. Satan is the exact opposite of who Christ is and what he stands for.'"

"Romney dismissed Huckabee's rise in the polls — saying he's seen similar surges from GOP rivals John McCain, Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson — but he said scrutiny will follow his rival's rise to the top tier."

"'I think Mike was desperately hoping that we would get through this without people taking a close look at his positions and his record, but his record on immigration, on pardons for criminals, on reducing the penalties for meth lab dealers, on taxing and spending — he increased spending from $6 billion to $16 billion. I think those features in his record will cause those numbers to turn around,' Romney said."

The above quotations are from the article
Romney: Attacks on religion go too far

By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer.

Associated Press Writer Libby Quaid in Washington contributed to this report.**

There is really no excuse for Mike Huckabee's seemingly innocent anti-Mormon comment
, especially in light of the fact that he is an ordained Southern Baptist minister, and ought to know more about religious tolerance than the average lay Christian.

I would like to believe that our next U.S. President will not be elected based solely on assertions that he is an evangelical Christian. I think this tactic to be dishonest. I am looking for the most honest candidate, and Mitt Romney definitely qualifies. Mitt has been honest enough to admit his mistakes, something not everyone is capable of doing.

Mitt Romney has also been consistent as a man who not only believes in conservative values, but practices them as well. I have never heard that Mitt Romney ever criticized anyone else's religious faith, and, in fact, Mitt's recent "Faith In America" address, which was similar to John F. Kennedy's famous 1960 "Catholic" address, demonstrates his immense concept of the meaning of religious tolerance.***
Perhaps Mike Huckabee should consider taking a few lessons from the next President of the United States of America, President Mitt Romney. I like the way that sounds.
